Specifically Nov. "49 thru May "51 when there are 2 blank pages and a skip
to 1954 (apparently used another book for 3 yrs) However this brief period
had some interesting events.
There were 25 foreign roads with 37 cars being sealed/resealed. Again, the
2 big eastern RR's were most common: PRR with 4 & NYC with 3 1 with steel -
no coil flats yet). Next were 2 each: Milw, SL-SF, SAL, Wab, ACL, SP (1
with tires) & GM&O (brass castings to Decatur, IL). One ea for B&M, MEC
(asbestos felt coming from Albany, MO), N&W, MP, Erie, EJ&E, GTW (clay going
to John Deere foundry), NP, CN, NKP, UP, Oregon Short Line, M&StL (lead to
"J" @ Eola), C&O, Santa Fe & a short line: Wichita Falls & Southern (anyone
even make decals for this road that connected with FtW&D?).
Private & RR owned reefers comprised 11 lines with 24 cars: St. Louis Refrig
Exp (Budweiser) with 9 inc. 3 in one train, Northern Refrig Car (NRC), Santa
Fe & PFE with 2 ea and 1 each from URTX (beer going to Creston), MRX
(Morrell), ART, FGEX, WFE (a 40' wood reefer but handling an express load
opened by express agt) and a rarity - Lackawanna Refrig Line (at the time
was being phased out and into DL&W reporting marks; a load of beer - Rolling
Rock?).
The Q was very unique - 28 cars sealed but 1/2 were MoW or Express: Regular
frt included 132230 with office supplies from the Ottumwa depot (cleaning
house?), 12911 with bags of cement, 16235 with trailer wheels from Galesburg
(parts for a mfg or for Q piggybacks?) & 18940 loaded with wallboard from
"Shafers" in Ottumwa but was sealed prematurely before loading was complete!
Express box 8857 (ex-Troop Kitchen) was in frt service (usually just
ahead of the waycars) carrying catalogs from Burlington to other points on
the Q. MoW included 208319 with matls going to Havelock; 2 bunk cars -
209955 & 210708 (only time the type of MoW car was spelled out); 210702;
250912 - an ex-hwt baggage car by its # and lading: had pipe load go thru
end doors and side door seals had to be broken to reload - assume assigned
to pipefitters or water gang but why even put popes in a closed car rather
than a flat or gon? Also 208298; 209003 & 210677 with notation for both on
same day "yard cleaner". ALso a work train made up of 210559, 212262,
210808, 210558 & 210156 inspected by Rip Track Foreman. Sealed MoW cars
were obviously tool/matls cars or if bunk were vacant as were enroute or
newly modified? I'm thrown by the 'yard cleaner' as such MoW trains were
flats & gons with a burro crane to pick up junk in yards to make things
safer for switchmen yet if cars were sealed they had to have been bunk or
tool cars. Your thoughts?
Next time will be mid & late 50's (we are going to 1967 so hang on for those
who model U-Boats).
