I interviewed Herb Wallace at great length for my book "Twilight of the
Great Trains." Herb had an infectious enthusiasm for passenger trains. In

the first half of the 1960s he was number two in the Passenger Services
Department and epitomized Burlington's passenger service, aggressively
selling the Zephyrs. There was nothing he wouldn't do to fill the seats!
When Lou Menk came from the Frisco to replace Harry Murphy as president,
he quickly put a stop to the promotion of passenger service and Herb left

within a year to pursue another career with Hertz. Menk liked Wallace -
he
was just convinced (correctly as it turned out) that the Q was throwing
good money after bad into passenger trains - and begged Wallace to do for

Burlington's freight sales what he had done for passenger sales. But
Herb's heart wasn't in it. Wallace symbolized an era that is almost lost
in the mist, when railroads wanted to be judged by the quality of their
passenger trains.

Thankfully, I was able to go to Mr. Wallace's funeral this morning.
It was a very nice - and well attended - service.
