Bob,
You are basically correct. The Burlington intended to run Silver Patio and
Silver Garden long end first. If you look at photos of both cars, you will see
the sand fill hatch (for better braking and anti wheel sliding) for the
sanders on the lead end of all Burlington's cars built in the 1952-53 period.
It's
next to the vestibule on all cars of that era, with the exception of the
diners Silver Manor, Silver Cuisine, Silver Inn (2nd) it's on the dining room
end.
Which indicates your Kansas City Zephyr Diners were planned to operate with
the kitchen to the rear.
However with all things, the sanders must not have been terribly successful,
and you will find photos of the Patio and Garden running short end first on
occassion.
The Canadian Pacific cars did not have sanders, and they ran the cars long
end forward. I have observed photos were VIA has been operating these cars
short end first.
If you think about it, if you are climbing the stairs to the dome and the
train goes into emergency, you would want to fall forward on the steps, and not
backwards! (The stair case was on the short end).
