Some time in the 40's or 50's, the publishers of the ORER came out with
separate edition for passenger equipment and the cars show up there. Some
small RR's as well as some private owners continued to list some pass. equip
in the frt version but most cars were listed in the pass. book inc. the
Q/FtW&D/C&S. Several RR's had cars that were dual purpose so there was not
a hard & fast rule as to whether you listed such in the frt or in the pass
editions. Ditto for some frt cars that were dual MoW and revenue - on the Q
this included some ballast hoppers and fuel tank car. And speaking of
modeling the ex-troop kitchen cars, many went into MoW service beginning in
the late 60's as passenger service declined. All still in original paint or
in later yrs BN off-white - to my knowledge none got MoW orange paint. They
tended to stay on the mains & near metro areas whereas the branches got the
really old equipment (wood & early steel). Recall seeing a couple in
suburban territory well into the 80's.
And completely off the subject but in the spirit of there's a prototype
for everything; have a slide of an ex-troop sleeper in passenger aluminum
paint hauling grain on the Rock Island in the mid-70's (grain doors where
the baggage door would be - they were desperate!). This was on the main
going thru Iowa City.
