That was the logical move and if there had been a Supervisor on
the scene he/she would have probably told the crew to try the
same thing. If it works and does not tear up any more track then
it's a "good" thing.

BTW, I read the service interuption reports on a daily basis and do
not recall that derailment being reported at the system level. It was
handled locally. That is also not the way it is "supposed to be".

Here is a question for you:

Road crew arrives to pick up at Congress Park. Only clear track is
#3. Track #1 has been left hanging out at the East end so it blocks
the lead. Crew sets their waycar in #3 and goes to get a track to
double to it. Air is evidently cut out on waycar and no hand brake is
set. Waycar rolls East and hits an empty box car where track #1
meets the lead. South side of waycar is lifted in the air and whole
waycar would have rolled into street if the corner steps had not
gotten caught under the side sill of the box car. I have seen many
cars cornered in that yard in the same manner but never so much
damage. The drawbar at the West end on the waycar is cracked
right down the center with the knuckle closed. This end of the waycar
could not have made contact with any of the cars on track #1.

I'm sure some one on this distingushed list can tell us how that
happened.

Russ
