<had "horsed her over" to go back from whence he came, the switchmen
would give him a sign that he needed to go a bit more the direction
he had been going...thus causing him to "horse her over" again...>
In the 70's, at Eola yard, I worked with two old-head Foremen that
were pretty good at that trick - - - even with Diesel's. One had
a "gift" in that he could stop a cut with the trailing truck of the
last car ON the points. It made no difference how many or how few
cars you had ahold of - - - the last truck would stop on the points.
I discussed his quaint habit with him and all he'd do is smile. Of
course, as you mentioned, with Diesel's it didn't have the same
impact as with steam.
Some hatreds die hard.
