Yes, there was some real animosity between the
"crafts', at times. But most wasn't real, it was just
fun! There was a separation, of sorts, between
enginemen(firemen and engineers) and trainmen(brakemen
and conductors). There was a power struggle between
engineers and conductors. Enginemen and trainmen, for
example, did not share sleeping quarters in hotels or
elsewhere. As one who is last than objective, I
thought hoggers were pretty hard to deal with!
