Greetings fellow modelers of Q heavyweight equipment.

This weekend I picked up some of the NKP Car Company kits for the
Burlington's BA-10 baggage and rider cars. The kits look like they have
the potential to build into very nice models with moderate effort, some
additional parts and ingenuity. Kudos to whomever was involved with the
effort to produce them.

With kits in hand, I now have questions about the prototypes, which I
suspect many other modelers will want to ask also. In some cases I'm
trying satisfy my own curiosity, but my primary purpose is to sort out
which specifif cars can be accurately modeled with these kits.

I have Bill Glick's invaluable diagram book (but not his roster book)
and it adds a great deal of information which I will include. Many
questions remain, however.

BA-10A RIDER CAR

Apparently the Class BA-10A Baggage cars with conductor's compartment
(Rider cars) consisted of four cars, which were originally wood sheathed
(cars 1490-1493). The kit instructions include a photo of 1491 with
steel sheathing and later gothic lettering.

When were these cars re-sheathed with steel?

Did all four of the BA-10A cars receive steel sheathing? If not, which
others besides 1491 were known to?

Do any photos exist to show the placement of the Roman-style lettering?
The spacing of the door openings makes me wonder if they had to split
the road name when lettering with the Roman stencils.

How were these cars employed during the mid-1930's?

BA-10 BAGGAGE CAR

This series is a bit more difficult for me to sort out. Page 67 of Mr.
Glick's diagram book lists series 1490-1499, which originally had wood
sides. As mentioned above, cars 1490-1493 were rebuilt with conductor's
compartments. Of the remaining six cars, 1496 was known to be
steel-sheathed, and the NKP Car Co. kit includes a photo of this car
with Roman-style lettering.

Page 68 of the Glick book has a diagram and information about cars that
appear to be nearly identical, though they apparently had a "Dynamo
Room" initially, with a small window located on the end with the double
doors (this is seen in the diagram of the wood car. These series were
BA-10 (car 1500), BA-10B (car 1503) and BA-10C (cars 1501-1502 and
1504-1524). Apparently at least 1520 and 1524 were steel-sheathed, and
the diagram in the book appears very close to the arrangement of the
etched side from the NKP Car kit. The Dyanamo room was removed from
cars 1512, 1517, 1520, 1523, and 1524.

When were these cars re-sheathed with steel?

Did all six cars in the 1494-1499 series receive steel sheathing? If
not, which others besides 1496 were known to?

Which of the other cars (besides 1520,1524) from the 1500-1524 series
were resheathed with steel?

Was the small window removed when cars with the Dynamo room removed were
steel sheathed, and did the steel sheathing arrangement and other
details resemble that of the 1494-1499 series cars?

Thanks in advance. I would welcome a dialogue with any other modelers
who are interested in this or any similar modeling projects.

Best regards, Rob Adams
