John,
I'll jump in here.
First, I'm new to this list and a recent fan of the "Q" circa 1950 - 1963 as
I plan on building a layout based on the St. Louis are of that time. I came
here to learn about the CB&Q so I know little about the road's motive power.
I can tell you the NYC received all of their F-3's and the first few orders
of freight F-7's with what many refer to as a "passenger" pilot. All but 3
units of the NYC's F-3 fleet were freight locomotives. These F-3's and F-7's
were delivered with coupler shroud pilots. In the mid-fifties the coupler
shrouding was removed but the pilot remained intact, permanently, on some
units. In the early sixties some units received a "freight" pilot.
Is it possible a similar thing may have happened to the "Q"s F-3's?
