Per the 1928 Documentary History of the CB&Q, the Rockford, Rock Island &
St. Louis RR was inc. & organized in 1865 to build from Rockford via
Sterling & Rock Island to the Illinois side of St. Louis. In 1868 it bought
the St. Louis, Alton & Rock Island which had a grade from Whitehall to
Beardstown. In 1869 they acquired the grade from Oquawka to Gladstone from
the failed Peoria & Oquawka and laid track thereon. Defaulting on bonds,
the RRI&StL was foreclosed in 1876 and reorganized by new owners as the St.
Louis, Rock Island & Chicago which in turn was leased by the Q in 1877 &
fully absorbed in 1899. No mention of Mr. Cable is made in any of the many
annotated documents. I have am 1873 pass from the RRI&StL signed by R R
Cable as Gen. Super. Have not seen a StLRI&C pass. Gerald
