Subject: [BRHSlist] Roller Bearing/friction Bearing
Roller bearing trucks have been on passenger and engines for many many
decades. Starting in the late 50s roller bearings appeared on new 70 and then
in the 60s 100 ton equipment(but not all by any means). I know from first
hand experience that UTLX was still equipping some new cars w/friction
bearings in 1969 and 1970. I dont have the field manual for the correct year
handy but I do believe friction bearings were banned on new equip about 1972
or so.
I can say w/absolute certainty that friction bearings were banned on all
interchange equip in either 1992 or 1993. I was chasing cars in 1994 that
were still equipped w/friction bearings. We had to make special arrangements
w/CR to move the last block of 20 of them to scrap. Converted sideframe cars
were banned in 1994 or so.Whats a converted sideframe you ask? Well it was
the industry rage for several years.Take a friction beraring sideframe and
modify the journal boxes, and put roller bearing equipped axles under the
side frames. It was a cost saving measure.UTC did manage to get all those off
the rails and/or converted to std roller bearings by 1994.
