Per a hard-bound 1889 Chicago Div. Rules Governing Movement of Trains from
Western to Stewart (just E of Canal); there were 3 towers: Wood St Tower (S
of tracks, W of Wood St); Throop St Tower (N of tracks, E of Blue Island
Ave/Throop St intersection) and Johnson St Tower (S of tracks, W of Johnson
& E of Brown St's). All signals (main & switching) are shown on a long
fold-put map plus insts for ea area in the book itself. Home signals E of
Johnson St. Tower were operated from cabins: one under the Canal St. viaduct
& 1 @ Jefferson St.
The only streets that used viaducts to get under the Q at the time from W to
E were Blue Island, Throop, Center, Halsted & Canal. Western must have been
a nightmare for the horses & buggies @ the time! (2 Mains, Frt Track, lead
to roundhouse & lead to yard had to be crossed). The Frt Track (S of the 2
mains) was exclusively E-bd from Western Ave to Wood St. Tower. Gerald
