I have a copy of RAIL CITY: Chicago U.S.A. by George H. Douglas in my
collection. This was published by Howell-North Books in 1981. The ISBN is
0-8310-7150-8.
This book is a general history of railroad development in Chicago. It
includes discussion on all (so it seems to me) of the stations in Chicago,
including early ones that were later replaced. There's also discussions of
the name trains running into and out of Chicago, local interurbans and
commuter service.
This is a good general history book. One item that could have been improved
would be additional maps of the various lines in Chicago. I recall that the
reviews of the book in the railfan press at the time also thought that this
was a shortcoming.
I believe this is out of print now. It may be available at swap meets. I am
not sure of how many of these were printed.
