Two wreaks so far this week.
1st A northbound BNSF ballast train rear-ended a BNSF modal trainload of empty
containers moving from Portland, OR to Tacoma, WA. Two engines and 20 cars of
the maintenance train and two cars of the modal were derailed shutting down the
mainline between Portland and Seattle for more than 24 hours. These tracks
carry 50 trains a day including 2 Amtraks, The Cascade (Vancouver, BC - Eugene,
OR) and the Coast Starlight (LA - Seattle). Two crew members on the maintenace
train were treated for minor injuries at the site.
2nd A 141 Southern RR freight derailed 24 cars at Farragut, TN (near Knoxville)
spilling 10,000 gallons of sulfuric acid causing the evacuation of more than
3000 people from nearby homes. No one was seriously hurt.
