Following is excerpted from a confidential report issued by Murphy's office
to Officers & Directors re: A Special Report Omaha-Chicago Line
for confidential use. (Note: I used a bit of shorthand)
"Frt train skeds of th liens between Council Bluffs & Chicago are as follows
(lists all RR's (IC, NW, Milw, RI, CGW] but I'll just show Q)
E - Lv. CB 7:15 am - Arr. Chi 12:30 am
Lv. CB 4:30 pm - Arr. Chi 1:30 pm
W - Lv. Chi 11:00 am - Arr. CB 6:00 am
Lv. Chi 8:00 pm - Arr. CB 7:30 am
E frt skeds are controlled by the movement of livestock, packing house
products & western fruit & vegtables, One Burl service lvs Oma-CB in the
early evening & arr's Chi shortly after noon the following day being
principally a local Oma-Chi service. Another service lvs Oma-CB
early int he morning & arr's Chi 12:30 am next morning, This sked handles
important western fruit & veggie traffic rcvd from connections
@ CB on the transcon sked. The 12:30 am arr @ Chi permits placement of
fruits & veggies on team tracks, to auction houses, etc as early as
desired by the trade & further provides for dely to E lines for depart
ures on their fast morning trains.
2 thru services are operated Chi-Om. One lving Chi in the evening,
arriving Om following noon. This provides fast afternoon dely of mdse
The Burl & Milw are the only lines providing this service, the other lines
arr in the evening. THe other service protects business from connections or
switched from industries & delivered in the early a.m.
as well as frt originating in the Chi District. This service departs
Chi in the middle of the morning & reaches Oma for dely the following
morning, thus frt loaded @ Chi during the working day or dely to the RR
before 7 am the following day will be set for dely @ Oma the 2nd morning
after being loaded. The Burl, RI, NW, MILW & CGW all provide
2nd morning dely in Des Moines based on morning depart from Chi. RI evening
departure provides for arr @ D.M. about noon the following day which in some
instances provides for afternoon dely. The NW's pm
departure provides for an early afternoon arr & a possible late 1st day
afternoon dely. The other lines provide for 2nd morning dely.
Frt & psgr service is arranged to p/u on mainline trains business
brought in by the branches or connecting main lines. Therefore the branch
line & secondary mainline skeds are controleld by the times
of mainline trains@ jct points. Trains to & from CB connect with Oma
trains @ PAc Jct providing daily service berween Chi & CB.

Hope that helped explain some of the Q's frt operating philosophy - looking
at customers, connections AND competitors.
