Per "Waycars of the CB&Q" by Lorenz & Holbrook (soon to be reprinted with
heavy expansion/revision by Milepost 206) there was one true baywindow
waycar on the Q - #14700, Class NE. Reblt ("59 Havelock) from a wrecked o/b
wood boxcar (#16847)& painted mineral red, it served in Chicago up to & thru
BN ("70) on transfer runs. Painted BN green, it ended it's life in "72 in
Hannibal. (also ONCE, post-BN, on the W. Chicago Branch while enroute for
green paint & new #11274). In appearance it was a typical "transfer
caboose" - center of box car kept as "cabin" with long open platforms @
either end w/railings.
There were also a series of 40' doublesheathed boxcars reblt into
"waycars" ("43-45 @ Havelock) by having door cut into center plus a couple
windows - both sides. One window (both sides)was "extended" (a quasi-bay).
Most were scrapped shortly after the War (all by "53 except 14836 whcih
lasted til "60). Used in yard, transfer & way frt service. Numbered
14800-90 from the extinct NE-5 class but were classified plain "NE".
