John,
What was the railroad's motivation for painting the cab roofs
with "red lead" ? Why not just keep the cab roof black like most of
the engine ? Was it some how for the convenience of the guy filling
the tender at stops to have visual contrast between the tender deck
and the cab roof ?
>From pictures of various RRs, it appears that other RRs than the Q
also painted their cab roofs red. I have always wondered why.
