Bryan,
UP has trackage rights over BNSF between Chicago and
Kansas City. It was probably a UP train.
In addition the old concept of "run throughs" really does not
apply any more. Railroads use other road's power as they
wish and when and where they wish. There is an accounting
system set up and it is all evened out somewhere along the
line. When one road gets too deep in debt to another an effort
will be made to keep that roads units off the line that is in the
hole and to get the debtor road units on the road with the positive
balance.
A simple example would be if the BNSF is way out of balance
with CSXT. CSXT gives BNSF a Galesburg train at Chicago
with four CSXT units. When that trains gets to Galesburg the
CSXT units are turned back on the next train to the CSXT plus
four BNSF units are added on. If the CSXT needs power then
they will keep the BNSF units which helps even the balance.
There are all kinds of different scenarios possible. While I
think the train in question was probably a trackage rights train
it very well could have been a train off of any connecting road
and the UP units just happened to be available to handle that
train. Locomotives are pretty much generic tools these days
and are used by anyone where and when they are needed.
