Just for general edification. We've (the industry) come a long way on this
subject. Just read a TTC(Transport Test Center in Pueblo) report on hot box
detectors on the CN.
On at least one stretch of busy main they have them placed every 15
miles(yup) and they're connected to a central location that receives reports
as to the degree of overheating(not just if its hotter than a given
threshold). They're working on perfecting the technology/methodology and hope
to be able to pinpoint when to set out a given car when its both convenient
and before it goes into failure mode !
They hope to time s/o to reduce road delays and false alarms, etc.
