Subject: Q end door box cars
The Q like all RRs, originally carried autos/trucks on open flats and then in
box cars but loading of the latter was difficult, especially as autos got
larger. Thus double doors and then end doors were added (several generic RR
books have good photos of cars being "shoehorned" into box cars thru the double
doors). Automobile box cars served that purpose in decreasing numbers into the
early 50's when semi-truck "car carriers" had nearly all the new car delivery
business until RRs came up with autoracks. I have a slide of an end door Q 50'
wood boxcar in BN MoW service at E. Dbq in the 70's. Series on roster in 1960's
included 50' boxcars 20500-25009 (steel) & 46600-46749 (wood) and 1 remaining
wood 40' = 7043. If you model earlier, in the 30's there were 40' end door cars
(all wood): series 40000-40009 & 47000-47189 with Evans Auto Loaders in all of
the 47000 series. Conventional 40' boxcars were also used with Evans Auto
Loaders in that era but with 12' and 12' 6" doors. The early 50's saw end doors
in series 7000-7189, 40000-40013 & 47000-47189 (40') and series 20500-25009 &
48500-48599 (50') with only the 20500 series being steel. Am not aware of
C&S/FtW&D end door box cars in revenue service but my interest is Lines East.
