I had always been under the impression that the cab roofs were 
painted the same mineral red as pieces of Q rolling stock and 
stations. It seems only logical to use the shade of red used on 
other equipment. Of course, unless your locomotive is fresh from the 
shop, you can use virtually any dark red because the cab roof was 
always covered with soot before long.
