Many, and of those (like PRR on some divs) were iron oxide - it was
partially to protect against the ash content in the smoke. My guess is
(and not remembering much) you'll see this far more on a coal burner, and
if on oil, it wouldn't have to be IO, it could be any color.

Good question! And what color red was it also. I've always thought it was
iron oxide red (almost a primer red). I've heard Frisco #1522 described as
having a "Pepsi red" cab roof which certainly is brighter than the Burlington
red I think. Any other roads have different color cab roofs like Burlington
and Frisco?
