Another example of the extent of follow-on operations, was on the NY Central
in the late 20's and early 30's. The 20th Century ran out of NY City with as
many as seven sections. These were all-pullman trains, each carrying 130
passengers. Not all sections made all of the normal stops. At Utica, for
instance, only one section would stop. That section would make a 2-minute
stop.
To handle reservations, the Central had a room full of telephone operators
working full time at Grand Central for the sole purpose of making
reservations on the 20th Century. (Talk about the good old days!!)
