I have variety of photographs which show that Burlington waycars had only a
longitudinal walkway down the middle of the roof -- no cross walks either
next to the cupolo walls or at the ladders. Walks seem to be just four
continuous planks.
I have a print of a rendering of a C&S waycar which appears to have cross
walks, both where the ladder rails come down at the roof, and running
laterally out from the center walkway at the front and back walls of the
cupolo. (I doubted the accuracy of this print until I learned recently that
the archbar trucks depicted were correct). This print is probably correct.
Crosswalks on Q waycars extend only a few inches beyond the ends of the roof.
There is a very flat bracket supporting the overhang, which appear to be
made of steel straps, forming a triangle, bolted to the edge of the roof.
The planks forming the platform are supported on spacers 2 or 3 feet apart
which hold the planks an inch or 2 off the roof. The roof is arched a few
inches, high in the middle, for drainage.
I'm referring to old Burlington waycars, the old NE's with wood siding. I
pay little attention to anything beyond the 30's and 40s.
