I drove through this area last week in an on and off again snow storm.
Wonderful scenery from about 6 miles west of Trinchere through to Des Moines.
A little remote, and definitely a trek where you want a full tank of gas.
The road through Trinchere is dirt and gravel once you get off of US 165 out
of Trinidad until you get to Branson, Colorado, then it is paved through to
Folsom and Des Moines. Prehistorically, this area was geologically very
active, and there are a lot of cinder cones and extinct volcanos in the area
that heightens the scenic effects. Although Raton Pass is very scenic, this
route is a definite winner if one is going from Colorado to Texas. Once you
get to Des Moines, you have an unobstructed view of the old C&S and then
FtW&D for almost the entire distance from Des Moines to Ft. Worth! That's a
lot of miles even for a Texan.
