Lenny: This is another of those topics where the answer is "It all
depends..."
If you look on page 13 of my CB&Q in Color Vol 1 you will see that #9372
has the 2 small windows on the from of the cab above the hood. If you
look on page 17 (again Vol 1) you can look through the cab of #9370 and
see that these 2 small windows are still there. There is also another
shot on that page of #9372.
If you go to my Vol #3, turn to page 116-117. Here #9350, 9354, 9359 and
#9377 have had these small windows plated over. The large photo on page
116 shows 4 of the VO-1000s, all of which seem to have these windows
plated over.
As Rich suggests in his posting, as a general statement there are detail
variations common to the locomotives assigned to KC that are different
than the VO-1000s assigned to Cicero. The most visible is that, as a
general statement, most of the VO-1000s with 4 stacks seem to have been
assigned to KC (actually St. Joe Division). Most of the single stack
engines appear to have been assigned to Cicero.
A large number of the KC engines seem to have the horn mounted on top of
the cab, while the Cicero engines have the horn mounted on top of the
hood just in front of the small window on the fireman's side.
Here is what I have in my photo files on these little windows: The
following have the windows plated over (and if it is 4 stack or 1):
#9350 (4), #9352 (4) 5-61, #9353 (4) 5-61 and 7-65, #9354 (4), #9355 (4)
5-61, #9356 (4) 9-61, #9359 (4) 10-60, #9362 (4) 10-60, #9364 (4) 9-65,
#9366 (4) 9-65, #9374 (1) 12-64, #9377 (1) 9-48. If not mentioned here,
then the small windows were not plated over. Again, this is from the
photographic evidence I have in my files. The dates are the earliest
photos where I show that the windows had been plated over.
I hope this helps. Anyone have more thoughts on the VO-1000s ??
