Correct - except that the DZ auxiliary cars had four generators (mounted
transversely (crosswise). The TCZ/NZ aux cars only had three each. Note
the radiator grills in the pier panels (and exhaust stacks). Since this
model of shovelnose had no steam generators in the A units, the TCZ/NZ aux
cars had to also include the steam generator capacity.
Because the DZ and TCZ/NZ A-unit shovel-noses had no steam generators, the
transfer of the As to pool service presented a problem. The baggage car
Silver Treasure was a proposed solution to the problem (Budd 1948) by having
a steam generator built into it . . . the other solution was to use the
shovelnose As as single-unit power only during summer, and relegate them to
booster assignments in the colder season. In conjunction with this, they
were equipped with through steam lines to pass heat from the lead unit(s).
The whole megillah was rendered moost in '51 when these four As had their
windows blanked, grills opened and converted to plu-ugly B units.
