Subject: William E. "Billy" Gregory
Dear Sir,
I have in my possession a copy of the Aurora Daily Beacon News
dated Monday 29th. November 1948 which contains a piece covering the
retirement of a relation of mine, on my mothers side, from the Burlington
Railroad after fifty-seven continuous years of service with the company.
William E. "Billy" Gregory was one of six brothers, five of
whom, together with their father Tom, all worked on the Burlington after
leaving England to make their new home in the U.S. Uncle Will, as my mother
called him, started as a fireman in 1891and retired at the age of
seventy-five on pension - I think he had probably earned it! His last engine
was 2118.
I have several of his service pins presented to him from the
company as well as a citation from Mr. J.D.Farrton the then superintendent
of the company, who, incidentally went on to become president of the Rock
Island railroad.
Uncle Will was a frequent visitor to the old country, staying
with my parents, until the early fifties when we, as a family lost touch.
My mother who is now eighty often speaks of him with great affection and
although all this happened before I was born I feel that I knew him as
well - he was very much a larger than life character and had many colourful
stories of his life on the Burlington.
I am soon to visit Chicago on business and would dearly like to
make contact with any relations, if any, who might still reside in the area.
His last known address was 433. Oak Avenue, Aurora.
Apologies for writing to yourselves, I am sure these sorts of
letters are a nuisance, but if you , as an organisation could help in my
quest I should be extremely grateful - research of this nature is very
difficult conducted over long distance. Any suggestions you might have
would be very welcome.
Thank you in anticipation,
Yours faithfully
