Hi listers.
I just purchased Mike Spoor's third colour volume and it prompted some
questions about passenger ops on the K-line between St. Louis and Burlington.
Here's what I've pieced together so far...
My first timetable is from 1935. It lists 6 trains: #s 1, 8, 12, 15, 43, 44
Train 1 (northbound) continues in operation continuously from 1935 until either
late 1962 or early 1963. In November 1960 it is reduced to St. Louis to West
Quincy only. It is identified as a mail train in the late fifties and is being
pulled by #9908 Silver Charger in 1962 (which had been operating on the Lincoln
division since about 1958). Type of service and power for the rest of its life
are unknown. When the train is dropped from the timetable, #9908 goes to
Galesburg.
Train 8 (southbound) becomes the southbound Zephyr Rocket in January 1941. It
continues in service past my layout's era (1963) until, I believe, 1967 --
although not always called the ZR.
Train 12 (southbound) begins to operate as the St. Louis Limited as part of a
joint operation with the CRIP in 1937 until replaced by the ZR in 1941. It
continues to operate until April 1958. In the late fifties it is being pulled
by #9908 before it headed to Lincoln.
Train 15 (northbound) serves as the Twin City Express (counterpart to the St.
Louis Limited) from 1937 until January 1941 when it becomes the northbound ZR
continuing, as stated, until the late sixties.
Train 43 (northbound) is the Mark Twain Zephyr beginning in October 1935. Train
set #9903 operates on this run until February 1937 when it goes to Ozark State
Zephyr service. Power between 1937 and 1950 unknown. In 1950, #9903 returns to
MTZ service until it and the MTZ are retired. When exactly did this happen? At
times #43 and #44 are identified as the St. Louis to Burlington all stops
local. Was this following the removal of the MTZ. Train #43 continues with
#9908 sometimes in service until it is removed from the timetable with #12 in
April 1958.
Train 44 (southbound) is the MTZ counterpart of #43 from 1935 until the MTZ is
removed from the timetable. It becomes the counterpart of #1 sometime in the
fifties and similarly is first cut back to West Quincy and then discontinued
around 1963.
What I'm looking for are any of the details that would fill in the blanks, such
as:
When exactly did #43 and #44 cease to be the MTZ?
When did #1 and #44 get paired, and when together were they always a mail train?
During the life of the MTZ, were #1 and #12 the all stops locals?
Beginning in 1947, the Q operated a "commuter run" from Hannibal to Chicago via
Burlington. Did this train have numbers and when was it removed from the
timetable?
Any power details for the MTZ between 1942 and 1950 (or for any other train or
era) gratefully received.
Hoping to see what we can all come up with.
Duncan Cameron
