Bill,
Here are some possible consists with your CB&Q "Zephyr" cars-
Early Sixties "Kansas City Zephyr"
E - Unit-
RPO
Pre-War Coach
Vista Dome Coach (TCZ heritage)
Diner Parlor Observation
Non Articulated "Nebraska Zephyr"
Numerous head end (mail storage) cars, including an RPO
Pre-War Coach
Pre-War Coach
Pre-War Coach
Vista Dome Coach (TCZ heritage, appeared occassionaly but not assigned)
Pre-War Diner
Flat Top Parlor (improvise with Kato Obs)
"California Zephyr"
During the sixties (1964), a Pre-War flat top coach was assigned (Car CZ-30
in lineup) between Chicago-Grand Jct.
Check page 185 of "Valley Division Vignettes" by J.L.Krieger. A book about
the Santa Fe in the San Joaquin Valley, you'll see a photo on page 185 of a
make up "California Zephyr" detouring due to Sierra snows, sporting a
Burlington Pre-War Diner, and Rio Grande Lounge car (in place of the "Cable
Car" Dome Lounge.)
Finally, a late era "Aksarben Zephyr" might include a heavyweight RPO, could
use a lightweight in a pinch, followed by a flat-top coach, and a 10-6
Pullman.
So there are lots of possibilites. For the American Royal Zephyr, model the
era after the Kansas City and St. Joe, 6 Roomette, 4 DB, 4 Section Pullmans
were re-assigned. Use a Dome Coach, perhaps a pre-war coach and a 10-6
Pullman with head end equipment and you have the train. Later, the 10-6 was
replaced with a Slumbercoach for a bit.
