This is a report on the status of the three Texas Zephyr cars owned by
the Black Hills Central Railroad at Hill City, South Dakota as of
September 4, 2000.
I was in Hill City and Keystone today shooting some transparencies of
the Black Hills Central Railroad - a good day as both of their steam
locomotives (2-6-2s) were in operation(not doubleheading, however).
As for the condition of the three TZ cars, the diner is in Keystone. It
is going to be moved back to Hill City this fall in anticipation of
renewed service all the way into Keystone in the spring of 2001.
Interior of this car is not good, but exterior is not bad - some new
glass needed.
The two cars in Hill City, a coach and an observation, need a lot of
glass, with quite a bit of interior damage due to vandals. The words
TEXAS ZEPHYR are still quite readable on all three cars.
I have heard that these cars are for sale. For more information contact
Bob Warder, the owner of the BHC at 605-574-2222. They would need to be
trucked out, as the BHC is landlocked after the BN pulled out in 1983.
