Randy,

MTH's Premier Pioneer Zephyr was just announced in their 2000 Volume 3
catalog and is scheduled for delivery in 12/2000 (per their website
www.mth-railking.com). The Premier line PZ list price is $600 and
runs on O-72 and larger curves. MTH's Premier product line represents
3-rail trains that are intended to be scale in size and fairly
accurate to prototype for the hi-rail end of the O-gauge matket. Due
to the scale models, hi-railers tend to have large O-54 to O-120 size
curves (i.e., BIG train rooms). The ProtoSound system is standard
equipment for the Premier product line. The Premier line competes
scale models from Atlas-O, 3rd Rail, Weaver, and others.

MTH had previously announced a RailKing Pioneer Zephyr in their 2000
Volume 1 catalog which was released to dealers in 05/2000. The
RailKing version lists for $400 with ProtoSounds and for less ($300 ?)
with horn only. MTH's RailKing product line represents "near" scale
trains that are intended to run on more traditional sized O-27 or O-31
size curves on smaller layouts. Subsequently, the RailKing models are
less costly and at times have less detail than the Premier line models
(the RailKing models are mechanically very good and decorated well).
The RailKing line competes with Lionel, Williams, and other companies'
traditional toy sized O-gauge trains.

Sorry for the length of the response.

Bill

There has been an amazing (to me) amount of trade in these on eBay, since
the instant they hit the dealers' shelves. Protosound units have been
going for $340-370, and horn-only sets have been going for $230-240.

Best regards,

Randy
