Thanks for all the prompt, informative responses to my inquiry regarding a
steam locomotive excursion to Chillicothe, Missouri in June. Checking the
suggested WebSites, I learned that it will be #261 making an excursion from
Kansas City to Chillicothe on Sunday, June 25 departing at 9 a.m. This event
will be the grand finale of the Milwaukee Road Historical Society Convention in
Kansas City (June 22-25). Even though, at one time, Chillicothe enjoyed rail
action over three major carriers -- Burlington, Milwaukee Road, and Wabash --
now only the old Milwaukee rails are strong enough to host big-time steam.
Therefore, the route it will follow is easily known. Although it does not say
so explicitly, it is implied that the locomotive will return to Kansas City
arriving about 4 p.m. However, since there are no turning facilities in
Chillicothe, it may well be that the return trip will be by bus, and that #261
will go on from Chillicothe to its home base, wherever that is.
What might be of interest to members of this list is the fact that this means
there will be at least one, possibly two, deadhead movements involved. The
timing and routing of these movements is not widely known, so I have to assume
they have not been publicly announced. Since there is no extensively cohesive
remnant of the Milwaukee Road, these routings are not easily predictable. They
may well occur someplace over Burlington rails. Members of this list might want
to be alert to any information regarding such movements. If anyone on the list
learns something about them, I hope they will share it with the rest of us.
