Hi fellas! I'm a railfan by marriage, but also by heritage. I have enjoyed
reading some of the anecdotes and tall (or, not so tall?) tales on this list.
I guess most of you worked the Lines East, but I was wondering if any of you
knew my grandpa, Leonard McManaman of Lincoln. A native of Ireland, he
worked the CB&Q for years, and died in the late 1950's. I think he was a
security escort or courier. I believe he died as a result of injuries or
complications from a yard accident in the late 50's.
His son, Rick, worked the tower (in the early 60's?) until he joined the
Navy. He is now an orthodontic specialist in Colorado. In addition to
getting Rick a job, the railroad family took care of my grandma, Nellie, and
her daughter, Lennie after he was gone.
Lennie, my mom, tells stories of going down to pubs with her dad and eating
hardboiled eggs while Mac talked with friends. She recognized Lessman's
Roundhouse Lunchroom which is pictured in "The Hub of Burlington Lines West".
Because of the friends in the railroad community, Mom always had ride to
Chicago to see her future husband, just by dropping her father's name.
If anyone has any knowledge or memories of Leonard or Rick we would love to
hear them...only the good stuff, we already heard the bad stuff from their
wives. You can e-mail us directly at tandthall@a... or simply post them
on the list for all to read.
Thanks, Terri and Tom Hall
