Thread-topic: [CBQ] CB&Q Tank car trains
Good morning,

I have a Q publicity photo hanging on my den wall of FTs moving at tank train thru Wind River Canyon.  If you look closely at the shadows, there is a box car serving as a buffer car behind the FTs.

During WWII railroads operated crude trains for crude oil that had been transported by water previously. This was done to avoid the German u-boats that were operating off the U.S. coast.

Every available tank car was pulled from storage, shops, etc that would fit this need.
While cleaning out old files for an office move at my previous employer I found large amounts of correspondence about which cars would work and their locations. There was even discussions about leak rates in drips per minute that would be allowed to get the cars in service. Caulking was suggested as an acceptable repair vs replacing rivets.

There are available pictures of Q tank trains moving out of Wyoming in another time period. I dont recall any buffer car in the photos.
