I’m sure the Aurora switch crew was pleased that their spot time in the depot was interrupted.

I worked at Aurora Tower from Mid May'73 until Dec. 31, '73 and that fall we had a train come in off the C&I that would not fit between the road crossing west of town and the crossover on Hurd's Island to set out a couple loads of caves for the stockyard.  The Parade was over and the switch engine had just taken the last set of cars down to the Hill Yard.  So I had the train come on down to the tower and cut the cars off run east of the crossovers around where the old Merchants Bank stood and back the stock in on the depot tracks.  took the power back to the train and they headed for Cicero and when the switch engine came up out of the incline I lined them right on the stock shoved out the west end of the depot across and down the Sheep yard lead.;
Some people got some funny looks but it worked

Leo, it was at least late '77.  When I was still braking in the late summer of '77 we caught #74 out of Gillette.  There were six cars of cows on the head end.  Somebody decided that ten cars of coal at Wyodak were hot enough to put on #74.  Since you had to keep the stock on the head end, I rode the stock cars back into the plant to make the pick up.  It wasn't a happy experience, but I only had to do it once.  I always wondered if the ensuing delay caused them to have to make an extra watering stop somewhere down the road.
