Thread-topic: [CBQ] Observation Cars Purchased from SP&S

Ken:

It's my understanding that, due to the high levels of passenger traffic during WWII, the Office of Defense Transportation urged all the railroads to come up with additional coaches.  And since they couldn't buy new ones, they had to convert cars that were not vital at the time.  Thus the Burlington converted the "Minneapolis Club" into chair car 4800 and the "Mississippi" and "Riverview" into chair cars 4810-4811.  Only two were converted back after the war; the 4800 remained a chair car until its scrapping in 1965.

Hi Hol,

Were these cars rebuilt as chair cars in 1943 at the government’s insistence (apparently they didn’t like parlor-observations because they could sell more seats in coaches)? The GN observations on the Empire Builder were rebuilt to coaches at about the same time, and then after the war were returned to their original configurations.

Best regards,

I suppose I should have mentioned that Mississippi Riverview was the name of the Chicago-Twin Cities pair of trains for which these two cars were purchased from the SP&S.

Richard:

Sorry it's taken me so long to put all this together, but I think I've answered your questions by adding to and correcting the data below.  Note that the car name "RIVERVIEW" is one word, not two.  I'm also including some photos that may interest you.
