[CBQ] Heyday of Railroads?

Another question that came to mind while reading Corbin's book was the 
timeframe 
that could be considered railroad's most "prosperous" time.  I think a lot of 
people might say the 1930s, but at that point in time rail and passenger 
service 
had already dropped and many small lines had shut down.  At what point did 
railroads being to feel the loss of traffic & revenue due to 
automobiles/trucks?  I'd just throw out a figure of around 100 years 
ago...1916, 
but interested in what others may have seen.
