My impression is that turntables were more expensive to install and maintain
than wyes, since I can think of several instances on the Q and C&S where an
original turntable was replaced by a wye. But none going in the other
direction, except one case on the C&S narrow gauge, in which the branch was cut
back 5 miles to a point where there was no space for a wye, and an abandoned
turntable was brought in and (precariously) installed.
