Ray,
Thanks for the input. I remember your article on 5272 (which I'll go back to
now for a look). It sounds as though getting the Walthers cars down to the
"bare bones" isn't too tough. From the looks of their paired window coach, it
may serve as a better start for my combine anyway. The lower side on it seems
to have three major sections (like the combine) whereas the Branchline car has
four.
Appreciate the help.
Duncan

  Duncan,
I am not certain if the Walthers coach is 80 ft, but I suspect it is. One of
these days I will have to buy one or two or three.
I have "kitbashed" several of Walthers heavyweight (Pullman) and expect to do
several more. Bill Glick has done several, as well as some Branchline kits.
I had an article in the Feb 08 issue of the Zephyr, No. 57, in which I took 2
of Walthers 60 foot cars and kitbashed them into the 80 ft Combine/Baggage/RPO
No. 5272.
The Walthers 60 ft and 80 ft cars come apart the same way. Remove the roof
first, then the ends, and the rest is easy, just snap off the sides from the
core base.
I recently kitbashed Solarium car "Burlington House" using Walthers 80 ft
heavyweight Pullmans, and I know Bill Glick did a Solarium that I believe he
has written an article on for the Zephyr.
For those of you in HO that have not yet experienced the fun of kitbashing,
try it, it's fun and easy to do. Just take your time. Plus you can easily
expand your fleet of passenger cars.

considering modeling. I have two NKP kits, and certainly plan to obtain several
others eventually. It appears, having blown Bill Glick's wonderful drawing up
to full-size for HO that the Branchline single-window coach is a bit short (at
about 78 feet). Does anyone know if the Walthers' coach is 80 feet and how
easily it might come apart?

available CB&Q cars from NKP Products at their website. As I recall, he has
kits for at least a dozen CB&Q heavyweight cars. I suppose some of these might
also serve as a starting point for kitbashing as well.

happen and I wondered if anyone has had a go at using either a Walthers or
Branchline coach as a starting point. I suspect I'll be using ends, roof and
floor pretty much as is -- although I'll need to remove the side doors from the
vestibule leaving the vestibule itself open to view (so the construction of the
vestibule is a consideration). The sides I imagine I'll need to build from
scratch for the most part. If anyone is willing to share experiences, I'd
appreciate it (or recommend another starting point).
