A small addendum to the corn truck story deals with our departure from the
accident site.
As can be seen the dreaded, unbolted nose door is nowhere to be seen in the
photo of 6610. It's still WITH the 6610, just not in its original location.
Seems the bolts may be pivotal in keeping the door shut under impact. No
bolts - - no door. Actually, it lies atop the "facility" located in the nose
of the engine. Also located in the nose is a giant set of electrical resistors
whose job is to provide various intensities of headlight display. An attribute
of resistors under load is heat. An attribute of large resistors under load is
a LOT OF HEAT !! As we resumed our trip some corn must have been disturbed by
the air currents freely blowing through the open nose doorway. Some of these
kernels of corn must have found their way up and onto the headlight resistor.
The aroma now emanating from the nose compartment was a rather pleasant "movie
theater" like smell. Normally this would NOT be the odor one usually
associated with that location.
