Sure, double heading is usually always viewed as a big-time, mainline event.
"Usually" is what Hol, Norm, Russ and others are talkin' about, usually, NOT
ALWAYS !

During a fun-filled day in the Westbound yd. at Eola I was "asked" to go to the
Farnsworth Ave. Xing. and pull a train, tied up and later to be delivered to
the J, up to the top end of the "runnin' track" and tie it down again.

I had the "usual" NW or SW type switch engine and was happy to oblige. This
eng, I might add, had no MU anything's !!

At Farnsworth sat a loaded coal train with 1 unit, the others having been cut
off and run into Clyde. This is a bad place to start a coal load regardless of
the power but, with only a U30C, what choice did I have?? Doublehead, of
COURSE !!

I hooked on to the U Boat and had a long, detailed discussion with the
Switchman (the details of this "discussion" will not be included here) that
accompanied me from the yd. I thought I'd see what the Ugly Boat could do and
was rewarded with the expected failure. After all was in readiness (the full
details of "readiness" will not be discussed either) we started to do the
impossible. 1000 switch engine horsepower and 3000 (+/- a few) GE horsepower .
I was on the U Boat and between the 2 engines (truly, 2 separate engines) we
were able to drag the load of about 10,000 tons up to where the Yd. Master
wanted it.

I believe the trusty EMC product had been completely "de-carbonized" by the
time we got to the desired location.

Karl
