There have been some very good responses to your question.  Bill Glick's books 
are 
excellant to illustrate CB&Q/C&S/FW&D passenger cars.

Assuming you are questioning about Pullman sleeping cars.  Basically ALL 
Pullmans (Built 
& operated) had clerestories (Wood or steel construction), until streamlined 
cars/trains 
arrived in the 1930's.  

Also Clerestories were meant for ventilation, also fashion and custom in the 
cars before 
air conditioning,

A good book to get from a library or purchase is the John White book on 
passenger cars 
titled The American Railroad Passenger Car.  Will give you virtually every 
question you 
would have about passenger cars.

These are for the A/C added to cars which were not built with A/C, and it being 
added 
latter.  There was no reason to run the A/C ducts where it won't be needed or 
useful. 
There for usually not going over the vestibules.
