Most MOW equipment was marked rear end only. I thought of it as protecting the old, tired and weak. The draft systems in many of these pieces of equipment would not stay together if subjected to the draft and buff of a long train. Then there were the ancient and often outlawed (in interchange) truck components, etc, etc, etc. Also the theory(at least) was their old parts could be watched more closely from the waycar.

The oldest and weakest of all the MOW equipment were marked to be moved on wayfreights only.

A bit off topic -- all three of these MOW tenders are stenciled "REAR END ONLY." Any comments as to why?

Since the folio sheets listed assorted O-class engines as using this design, here are a couple tenders in company service that hopefully provide an idea of what the truck looked like in service. Hope the varied perspectives help. Jim Sandrin
