Ricky/Jim - If you go to the BRHS website Members Section and enter the Flickr SW7 and SW9 Photo Album, there are a good number of both black/white and color images of the switchers showing both the later larger Burlington lettering and earlier smaller Way of the Zephyrs and Everywhere West letterings.

Both the fire cracker and wagon wheel radio antennas appear to have been randomly used on the switchers regardless of how they were lettered.  The images show the differences 'tween the SW7 and SW9 models, plus subtle variations within the individual model such as the all-weather window boxes on some cabs.

The Flickr Albums are an excellent visual resource for modelers on how a particular locomotive appeared at some point in its service life - Louis

Jim,

Thanks, it helps.  It also looks like the piece of equipment behind the rear stack is missing from the later model.  What was that for by the way?

Looks like I will some additional research to see what if any early models got the larger Burlington lettering since the only picture I have of 9278 is from 1963 and it is still in the earlier lettering.

Ricky: There were definite differences between the delivered appearance of the two orders.  First the nature or design of the antennae was changed. As you pointed out, the "wagon wheel" was replaced with the Motorola "fire cracker" by 1965.  This can also be observed on road units as the second generation power, up to the first order of GP35s, came equipped with the "Whip" style with a round base. The second order of GP35s came with the motorola unit, as did all subsequent deliveries.  The lettering was also changed to the large Burlington as you pointed out.  The addition of the "all weather" window boxes was an aftermarket addition that the Q performed when the units were set up for service, and not all necessarily received them at the same time.  Another change was the different handrail stanchions and their mounting to the frame.
The tiresome debate over the shade of Grey is explained by the evolution of commercial paints away from the early lead based products of the 1940s and 50s. The Grey of the 1960s was pretty standardized with both the red road units and the black switchers receiving the same treatment.  That is my take on your question, hope it helps! Jim Sandrin

All,

I do have a question about the two orders of SW12s.  It appears the later units came in the big Burlington lettering, also some had all weather windows and no wagon wheel antenna.  Are there other differences between the two orders?

I ask because it appears that most of the Lines West (which I model) SW12s were the late order and the Rapido version looks like an early version.  I also have an older P2K version that I was relettering to the larger Burlington on the hood.

Thanks,
