When they were building the US Highway 18 overpass at the west end of Edgemont, we changed crews at the west switch of the Deadwood Wye.  I've seen all kinds of antics trying to get on the waycars.  One fellow threw his grip up on the front platform, and it fell off.  He grabbed it and made another throw, fell of again.  It took the third try before catching the rear steps.  Another got on the rear with the wrong hand, strung him and his grip out like a flag, then, it busted open.  The Conductor had to pull the air on that one.  Another time, I was down to walking speed coming off the 10th. Sub. at Campbell in the winter.  No waycar radio, and the Conductor though it was still going too fast for his slightly rotund Brakeman to get the switch, so he opened the Conductor's valve and stuck the waycar.  When the slack got to the head end, it popped the lead motor right off.  I was Firing, and my Engineer was riding the second motor.  He said that dust flew from everyplace in that GE cab.  It tore the drawbar out of the second motor, so, when we got called for that train again on our rest, we switched the second motor up to the point and went on our merry way.
