Rupert...Your last statement has answered the question which I have had...unresolved until now...as to whether or not the car was double ended during my time in service with that machine...As I stated in my post my time was August 1956.  Also I don't remember both ends wearing the red and yellow...If the "rear end" controls were not installed until 57 then perhaps it was then that the yellow and red was put on both ends.

To the best of my recollection the car was single ended in 1956...anything after that date I would have to have confirmation from someone who "really knows"...not just speculates.

As why the engineer didn't use the rear end controls...It was because they DIDN'T EXIST IN 1956.

Pete

As Bob Hope used to say, thanks for the memoires.

If 9769 had controls at each end, was there a reason for your engineer not using them both?
9769 was single-ended until it was converted from baggage-mail to baggage in about 1957 but I don’t know how firm that date is.

All the photos I've seen of the '69 show it as a double end car with both ends painted in the red-yellow paint scheme.  I don't remember the rear end being painted at the time I was there and I do know that our engineer never ran the car from the rear end..We backed up with the waycar ahead from Clay Center to Sutton.
