Bill,

Re your heat question, there is a thick layer of insulating "lagging" covering the boiler, from the smoke box to the cab.  The lagging, in turn, is covered by sheet metal.  The boiler is insulated for thermal efficiency.  As for the safety part of your question, the operating crew and roundhouse employees were all "old hands" at climbing all over the locos to maintain them.

I have a question that is slightly off-topic. In the second black & white picture, the picture of CBQ 4106 and the roundhouse crew, why is it safe for the crew to climb onto the steam locomotive like that? Aside from falls, etc, isn’t the boiler hot? Really hot? Or is the outset shell insulated from the boiler?

Just Wondering
Bill Scott
