I'll answer my own question. Zenon Hanson's "Zephyr 9900 at Fifty" in Passenger Train Journal said that car 500 was removed and stored "April-October 1950" during shop work. So with Philip's informat

As far as I know, car 500 was in 9900's consist only (when it was not in storage) since it was introduced in June 1938. A few years ago lawyer Ron Lorenzini Jr. bought 9903 and car 500, and I know I'
