This was discussed last year here and I'll copy my reply from then. The E5s, E7s and at least the early E8s (if not all) were delivered with single headlight fixtures. These were changed to dual seal

Was the Mars Light only activated at grade crossings, I have read the some railroad like the Rio Grande used them as headlights when not in gyrating mode? It is hard to tell if not a motion picture h

I had a similar experience riding the DZ from Aurora to Denver in 1967. I sat up in the dome car almost the entire night, enjoying the E units displaying their Mars light all across Nebraska. Verne B
